New Hangar Space Opens at Spirit of St. Louis Airport

To the excitement of the St. Louis aviation community, Spirit Sky Club at Spirit of St. Louis Airport (KSUS) officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 5th. The approximately 7-acre, $13 million first phase delivered 28 luxury hangars in two suite tiers (standard and deluxe).

The development was founded by two local father-son duos – Alex and Douglas Martin, and Kevin and Griffin Alm. The development team was initially inspired to pursue this undertaking due to the lack of available hangar space in the area.

Designed by Pilots, For Pilots

More than 200 people attended the ribbon cutting, which was held the night before the Spirit of St. Louis Air Show & STEM Expo. The headlining act for this weekend show was the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and included many other military and vintage aircraft performers, with celebrations highlighting the 250th anniversary of the United States and the 81st anniversary of D-Day.

“What we [opened] Friday is a community. It’s people who love aviation finally having a hangar that feels like home, and neighbors who care about it the same way they do,” said Alex Martin, founding partner of Spirit Sky Club. “Doing it the same weekend the Blue Angels c[a]me back to Spirit makes it that much better.”

The airshow drew a significant crowd of aviation enthusiasts. Similarly, bringing together the community is a main feature of the Spirit Sky Club. A main feature of the development is the private members’ club. Not only can aviators store their aircraft (and automobiles) here, this is a place where they can also come together for hangar dinners, member events, and weekend programming.

Hangars in High Demand

When the development team was first looking for space of their own, the hangar waiting list at KSUS was around 150 entries long. The number of people waiting for space has not wavered – showcasing the continued demand for hangars in St. Louis.

“Spirit of St. Louis Airport has needed additional hangar capacity for years, and Spirit Sky Club is exactly the kind of private investment that strengthens the airport and the region,” said John Bales, Director of Aviation.

“This is a one-of-a-kind facility that brings new pilots, new services, and a real sense of community to the north end of the field.”

The box hangars are 62 feet wide by 56 feet deep and there is a dedicated avgas stock available for members, as well as private bathrooms and 24/7 security. There are standard (including shared options), and fully customizable options, with the deluxe suites having a level of amenities that rival any other intentionally designed hangar development across the country.

“The caliber of Spirit Sky Club’s facilities is unrivaled in the region. The club offers some of the finest hangars in the state and the members are top notch.”

Looking to the Future

This milestone followed the members moving into their hangars in Spring 2026, after about a two-year construction of the facilities. Spirit Sky Club’s 97,000+ square feet of new facilities help to alleviate some of the need for aircraft storage space in St. Louis, but the need for more units persists.

This strong demand and willingness of airport management to solve this ongoing problem has been noticed by other development groups – including Blackbird Partners, who recently announced a 13-acre project at KSUS.

Spirit Sky Club has not yet announced plans for future development at KSUS or other airports.
